A Guide To Teeth Cleaning and Dental Hygiene

Share

Good dental health is important for your well-being and maintaining a bright, white, smile long term. Healthy teeth and gums play a critical part of this for your overall health, which includes the vital system of your digestive tract.

Our team of experienced dental hygienists, led by Lisa Bow, at Narrabeen Dental Care in Sydney are at the forefront of seeing the importance of maintaining excellent oral hygiene.

The following article will guide you through professional insights and practical tips about how to maintain healthy teeth and gums so your smile glows.

What is Dental Hygiene?

Dental hygiene refers to ongoing and supportive care of the teeth and gums to promote the health of teeth, and supporting structures within your entire mouth, making it possible for you to smile, speak, and chew. It refers to the practices and habits to prevent oral diseases and maintain the functionality and aesthetics of teeth.

The Importance of Good Oral Hygiene

Proper dental hygiene includes brushing, flossing, interproximal cleaning, and attending regular professional dental visits at a dental care clinic. You can remove plaque by brushing at least twice daily and flossing at least once a day, but also need professional cleaning to remove the tartar or calculus that accumulates over time.

Plaque is a sticky biofilm of germs that form on the teeth and gums; it develops after a person has eaten. If not removed, the plaque biofilm changes it’s composition, becoming problematic and destructive, which may result in gum disease and tooth decay.

Routine dental hygeine visits with our hygeinists are important to provide ongoing supportive periodontal care.

Why Regular Dental Check-ups Are Necessary

Regular dental care clinic visits will aid with early detection and treatment of problems. Most dental check-ups include a thorough chek of all the teeth, the oral tissues and gums. It also involves the removal of calculus and biofilm.

We’re very proud at Narrabeen Dental Care to provide effective preventive care and treatment supported by our compassion towards adequately taking care of your teeth.

How Can I Protect My Teeth?

Proper oral hygiene practice, a balanced diet, and regular dental visits are best ways to maintain super healthy teeth.

Along with these preventatives, you can also combine the following techniques in your daily routine:

1. Mouthwash

Mouth rinses may help control plaque and fight gum biofilm.

2. Floss

Flossing can remove food and plaque in between and under the gums, in places where your toothbrush finds it hard to reach. We recommend that you floss at least once per day to keep the gums healthy and prevent cavities.

3. Healthy Eating Habits

Your diet plays a vital role in your oral health.

Here are some helpful pointers to regularly up-keep your oral health;

Limit Sugary Foods and Drinks: Sugary foods and drinks are likely to cause tooth decay. Try to keep your consumption of sweets, sodas, and juices to a reduced amount.

Eat Plenty of Fruits and Vegetables: They contain high amounts of water and fibre, which helps balance their water and sugars; when eaten this produces saliva that helps create a mouth-cleaning process, washing away food particles and neutralising acids.

Dairy Foods: Dairy products contain some high calcium and phosphates, these help in rebuilding tooth enamel and neutralising the acids in the mouth. You can eat this in moderation with a balanced diet.

Directions on How to Brush Your Teeth

Check out these tips you can follow from our healthcare team:

Select the Right Toothbrush: The toothbrush you use should have soft bristles and be functional in your hand to reach all the parts of your mouth. Electric toothbrushes are also beneficial, with the latest versions having additional features to prompt the time spent brushing, as well as the pressure your placing on the teeth as you brush.

Use toothpaste with fluoride: This helps prevent cavities and strengthen tooth enamel, you can check if fluoride is added to your toothpaste by looking at the ingredients on the tube.

Twice a Day Brushing: Ideally, you should try to brush your teeth two times a day; in the morning and last thing before going to bed at night. This helps remove plaque and food particles that have developed during the day.

Use the Correct Brushing Technique: Position your toothbrush against your gums at an angle and use small circular movements when brushing. Do not brush vigorously, as this will likely injure your gums and tooth enamel. Brush for at least two minutes, ensuring that you brush all sections of your teeth.

Brush Your Tongue: Bacteria grows on the tongue, causing poor breath and other oral health-related issues. After you finish brushing your teeth, gently brush your tongue.

Replace Your Toothbrush Regularly: Change your toothbrush every three to four months, earlier than that if frayed. A frayed toothbrush will not clean your teeth effectively.
